Hat Making Workshop

from $400.00
sold out

Come learn vintage hat-making techniques from Cindy Gutierrez-krapp owner of Aghaa' Hat Co. You will design and create your own heirloom felt hat. Learn to use vintage hat blocks and tools to form and shape your hat by hand using techniques and tools of early hatters. Hand techniques will involve steaming, crown blocking, ironing, rim flanging, crown and brim finishing, hand sewing, machine sewing and crown shaping. You will take home a hat that you custom-made for yourself in your own unique style.

Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp is of Navajo/Diné, Mescalero Apache, and Yaqui descent from the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. She studied fiber arts and fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and traditional beading at the American Indian Community House under Lakowi Ne Oakes in NYC. She returned home to El Paso, TX, in 2018 and began the fiber arts project called Pins & Needles where she teaches bead weaving, weaving, embroidery, bead embroidery, and knitting. As an Indigenous textile artist, Cynthia creates beaded and textile artwork as a way of expressing generational trauma and reconnecting to her indigenous roots. She began Aghaa Hat Co in 2019 and currently makes and sells her hats at her studio/shop. Here, Cynthia is able to combine her talents for beading, textile arts, embroidery, and hat making.

Cindy continues to work that tradition to this day as a hat maker who makes quality felt hats one at a time by hand. She also makes and sell through Manitobah Mukluks’s Indigenous Market.
